Zirconium(IV) oxynitrate hydrate is used to prepare CeO2-ZrO2 mixed oxide catalyst supports. It may be used as zirconium precursor in the preparation of Pb(Zr0.50Ti0.50)O3 ferroelectric thin films, silica- and alumina-doped nanocrystalline ceria/zirconia (Ce0.5Zr0.5O2).
Indoles and aldehydes can undergo condensation reaction in the presence of zirconium (IV) oxynitrate hydrate to form bis- or tris(indolyl)methane products, which can undergo dehydrogenation to yield conjugated chromophores to be used as pH indicators (pH range 8–10).
